Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may perform multiple related searches across such subtopics and data sources rather than relying only on the wording of the original query. 

That is exactly where a well-designed topic cluster becomes valuable.

Instead of publishing one broad article and expecting it to answer every possible question, a business can create a pillar page covering the central topic and a set of supporting pages that explore important related intents in greater depth. This does not mean creating hundreds of slightly different articles for every conceivable long-tail query. Google specifically warns that producing separate content at scale merely to capture search variations or manipulate AI responses is not a sustainable strategy; a high volume of pages does not automatically make a site higher quality or more relevant. 

For SMEs, the better strategy is therefore depth before volume: own a commercially relevant subject comprehensively, organize that expertise clearly, and expand only where a new page serves a genuinely different reader need.

That is an inference from how RAG, query fan-out, and current AI-search content guidance operate—not evidence that simply publishing more pages increases LLM authority automatically. 

The goal is not more content. The goal is more complete knowledge.

They make relationships machine-readable

Depth alone is not enough. Your pages also need to make sense as a system.

Structured data can still be useful where it accurately represents visible page content, but SMEs should not mistake schema for a shortcut to AI citations. For an SME blog, that can mean showing:

Who wrote the article. Include an accurate author name and a biography demonstrating relevant experience.

How the advice was developed. Explain when recommendations come from audits, implementation experience, testing, original research, or client work.

Why the content exists. Write to solve a real business problem rather than merely target a keyword.

Those principles align directly with Google’s “Who, How, and Why” framework for assessing people-first content and E-E-A-T. 

Fourth, supporting pages give retrieval systems more relevant evidence to choose from. If a user asks a comparison question, your comparison article may be a better retrieval candidate than your pillar. If the query is about implementation, the process article may be more useful. If it is a buyer question, a service-selection page may fit.

That does not mean an AI system will retrieve all of them at once. It means the cluster creates multiple precise candidates for different related intents.

Recent research reinforces the importance of relevance. A paper presented at SIGIR 2026 ran 252,000 controlled trials across six LLMs and found topical relevance and context position were the strongest drivers of which candidate source received the first citation. Next, give each page a distinct job.

Two pages targeting essentially the same question with slightly altered wording rarely create meaningful depth. They can instead produce duplication and internal competition. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance specifically recommends reducing overlapping pages and duplication, while Google warns against generating numerous query-variation pages merely to manipulate search or AI responses. 

Create the internal-linking architecture at the same time as the content plan—not months later.

Every important supporting page should be discoverable from another relevant page, while the pillar should act as an accessible route into the deeper resources. Google explicitly recommends ensuring that every important page receives a link from at least one other page and using descriptive, concise anchor text. 

Then strengthen the cluster with original evidence.

A practical SEO article is more defensible when it includes audit observations, original examples, expert reasoning, screenshots, test methodology, case studies, first-hand experience, or data that genuinely helps the reader. Google’s current generative-search guidance prioritizes unique, expert-led, non-commodity content and cautions against simply recycling information already available elsewhere. 

Keep important pages current—but only change dates when the content has meaningfully changed. Google explicitly warns against changing publication dates simply to make old content appear fresh. 

Make sure the technical foundation supports discovery as well.

For Google’s AI features, pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional special technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. 

For ChatGPT Search visibility, businesses that want to be eligible should ensure OAI-SearchBot is not unintentionally blocked. For Perplexity search visibility, the same principle applies to PerplexityBot. Both companies publish official crawler guidance. 

Finally, measure the cluster as a topic, not merely as a collection of rankings.

In 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools provides an AI Performance dashboard showing total citations, average cited pages, sample grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and citation trends across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Bing explicitly cautions that citation counts do not themselves indicate ranking, authority, or a page’s role within an answer.
